How Everlit Candle Works

A full, honest look at what happens when you light a candle: the flame, the privacy, and the technology behind it. Written for anyone who wants to understand the details.

What Everlit Candle is

Everlit Candle lets you write a prayer, a memory, a hope, or an intention, and turn it into a digital candle. Each candle has its own flame, drawn from your own words, and is kept as a permanent record on the Solana blockchain.

It is meant for reflection and remembrance. It is not a financial product, and no crypto knowledge is needed to use it.

How your flame is made

Every flame comes from your words. Here is the simple version of how that works.

When you write your prayer, we run the text through a process called SHA256. This turns any text into a single long number, called a hash. The same words always produce the same number, and even a tiny change in the words produces a completely different number.

We use that number as a seed, a starting point that decides how your flame looks and moves: its colors, its shape, and the way it flickers.

So your flame is not random. It is drawn directly from your own words, and it is yours.

Public and private candles

When you create a candle, you choose whether it is public or private. This choice decides what is shared and what stays with you. This is the most important thing to understand, so we explain it fully.

Public candles

A public candle can appear on the Candle Wall, where other people can see it. The words of a public candle may also be written into the candle's permanent record on the blockchain. Once text is written to the blockchain, it stays there and cannot be deleted, by us or by anyone.

So please think carefully before making a candle public. Public means public, and on the blockchain it is permanent.

Private candles

A private candle is different. It is never shown on the Candle Wall.

When a private candle is recorded on the blockchain, we do not write your words. Instead, we write only the hash of your words, the one-way fingerprint described above. A hash cannot be turned back into the original text. So your actual words never appear in the public blockchain record.

Your words are still saved securely in your own account, so you can read them again on your My Candles page. They are shown only to you: never on the Wall, and never as readable text on the blockchain.

In short: public candles may put your words on-chain; private candles put only a fingerprint of your words on-chain.

The blockchain and your NFT

Each candle is recorded as a digital collectible (an NFT) on the Solana blockchain.

Each candle is a full, standard on-chain NFT (not a compressed NFT). It is minted using the Metaplex Token Metadata standard, and each candle has its own token mint account on Solana.

Here is what is stored and where:

"Owning" a candle means your wallet holds the NFT for that candle.

Your wallet

You do not need to know anything about crypto to use Everlit Candle.

By default, we create and manage a custodial wallet for you. This means we hold the wallet for you behind the scenes, so lighting a candle feels as simple as any normal website.

Later, if you want, you can transfer your candle to your own Solana wallet. After you move it to your own wallet, you are responsible for that wallet's security, and we may not be able to help with wallet problems.

Viewing your candle on the blockchain

Every minted candle can be viewed on a public blockchain explorer called Solscan. From your My Candles page, you can open your candle on Solscan to see its record on the Solana network.

For a public candle, the explorer may show the candle's public details. For a private candle, it shows only the hash, never your words.

One technical note: for public candles, the prayer text shown in blockchain explorers is limited to 138 characters. This limit applies to the explorer view only. It does not change the prayer you see on the Candle Wall or in your account.

Payments

Creating a digital candle is free. If you choose to make your candle Everlit, there is a one-time $7 payment by card.

Payments are handled securely by Stripe, a trusted payment company. Your card details are entered directly with Stripe, so we never see or store your full card number.

The blockchain network cost of recording your candle is included in the $7 price. There are no additional fees.

Accounts and sign-in

You can sign in with Google, or with a magic link sent to your email (no password to remember). We use Google's secure sign-in system, to manage this.

What is stored, and where

To be fully clear, here is a simple split of where your information lives.

On the blockchain (permanent, public):

In your account (private, not on the blockchain):

The difference is the whole point: private words stay in your account, and only a fingerprint of them ever reaches the public blockchain.

Permanence and deletion

The blockchain is designed to be permanent. This has two sides.

The good side: your candle's record cannot be quietly changed or erased. It is a lasting mark.

The other side: because it is permanent, some things cannot be deleted. If you ask us to delete your account, we can remove your information from our own systems and take your public candles off the Wall, but records already written to the blockchain cannot be removed by anyone. For a private candle this is only the hash. For a public candle it may include your words.

Not an investment

Everlit Candles are made for prayer, remembrance, hope, and reflection.

They are not investments, securities, or a way to make money. Please do not buy a candle expecting profit. A candle is meant to hold something personal, not to grow in value.
